Scitovsky 1175 N. Lemon Ave., Menlo Park, Cal. 94025 November 15, 1988 Dear Josef, Many thanks for both your letters. I sympathize with your struggles, since I too am struggling right now with a paper I promised to write for a February conference; and I find it very hard going. So I welcomed an excuse for quitting my typewriter for long enough to look up your references. All the TNEC Reports were published by the Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C.; #15 in 1940, the other two in 1941- The author of #15 is Charles L. Merwin Jr.; its chapter 2 is entitled "Profits of American Manufacturing Corporations", its page numbers are 17-42. Number 17's title is Problems of Small Business and it has 4 major and 3 minor authors: John C. Cover, Nathaniel H. Engle, Earl D. Strong and Peter R. Nehemkis Jr. are the major authors (each listed on a separate line with all his titles), William Saunders, Harold Vatter and Harold H. Wein are the minor authors. The authors of #22 are Lewis L. Lorwin who wrote Part I and John M. Blair who wrote Part II. R.C. Epstein's Industrial Profits in the United States was published in 1934~by the National Bureau of Economic Research, New York, N.Y.; W.A. Paton's Corporate Profits as Shown by Audit Reports was published in 1935 also by NBER; and Hartley Withers' Stocks and Shares was published in 1910 by E.S. Dutton, New York, N.Y. I believe that that was all you wanted and I managed to find it all within 15 minutes.I too used to read some of the TNEC reports, though I did not make such excellent use of them as you did. Anyhow, I greatly look forward to the publication of your collected papers. With best* regards from both of us. Yours,
