An initial study demonstrated that subjects could make personality inferences that agreed with self-ratings made by the owners of possessions based solely on this type of information. The relative value of information on four types of personal possessions was investigated. Subsequent studies examined subjects' perceptions of the usefulness of possession informaition for making personality inferences in the context of more commonly investigated behavioral cues. Indices of the informativeness of personality inferences based on possession information were also computed and contrasted with those based on behavioral information. Results indicated that subjects perceive personal possession information to be useful and that inferences based on possessions agree with those the owners of possessions make about themselves. ER -
