January 20, 1986
Dear Josef,
I just finished reading your paper in the current issue of the
Quarterly Review of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro and last night I met your
friend Badhuri. I liked both very much and hope to see more of the latter.
I am mainly writing, however, to say that we changed our original
summer plans and will be coming to Sils, after all, for the first half of
August and would, of course, love to see you there again. In July we are
hoping to go to Norway and Finland simply for sightseeing.
May I also ask you a question? 1 would like to find out what was the
? Wirtschaftlicher Ausgleich zwischen Osterreich und Ungarn' before the first
World War. I am trying to find out and write down if possible something
about my father’s career. He took part in innumerable international
conferences and negotiations throughout his active life and was, it seems,
the Hungarian counterpart to Austria’s Richard Schuller. Already in 1908, he
was made Ritter of the Franz Joseph’s Orden for his work in the negotiations
that led to the above-mentioned Wirtschaftlicher Ausgleich. All I would like
to have is an approximate idea of what that Ausgleich was. I remember its
being mentioned in my history course in school in Hungary3 but that was a
long time ago and 1 only remember the name. Walter Weisskopf, whom 1 asked,
also only remembers the name.
I would be most grateful therefore for a one-sentence explanation,
which you either have in your head or should be able to look up easily
enough in an Austrian history book or lexicon. Please take no more trouble
over it than the few steps to your bookshelf.
With best regards,
Yours ever,
