Dear J osef,
thank you for your letter. My objection to the
beginning of your paper was only that you gave
the impression of considering measurement and
aggregation as Sraffa's only (or main) aim or
concern; while I think he had other main aims
(to criticize the neoclassical approach^ atad to
reestablish the classical one) for which
measurement and aggregation were instrumental.
Of course Sraffa's analysis has then many
implications, and can be used for many purposes.
More thank that, cettain problems (employment,
market forms, etc.) require different kinds
or 'levels' of analysis; consistency in concepts
and 'vision' is required, but not necessarisly
strictly formal consistency. I don't think this
implies any disagreement with the object or the
substance of your paper.
Ceriani and I look forward to the revised version
of your Trieste paper on structure. I am progeeding
slowly with my paper for the Sraffa conference.
The administrative troubles take away large
amounts of time; I was elected director of the
department, against my wishes, and I will be free
to resign only in October. Jan was in Rome in
the past week-end: it seems that the Trieste
school will be repeated this year as well, lasting
a week, immediately after the Sraffa conference.
I am glad that we will aiso meet in Berlin in
October.
