Dear Mr.Allan, 
You were kind enough to write to me after the conference in 
Trieste last automn. At that time I had not yet made up 
my mind on a project which has now taken concrete shape. 
I want to ask you whether Macmillan would be interested 
in publishing a collection of my essays. I enclose a list 
of these papers for your information.They will be partly 
r 
revised, afew of them very thoroughly, and one or two 
unpublished papers will be added. This will take considerable 
work which has only started a short while ago, and completion 
of the whole thing will probably take the better part of 
this year. Nevertheless I thought it useful to explore 
the ground now. I have not bothered so far to ask 
permission to publish where it may be necessary but 
in most cases there will not be a problem to get it.
