Thus the depressed regions have an analogy in the local
ecological catastrophes such as the "death" of a river
or a lake. Again, the new cottage industries of
Charles Sable ( 1982) and the rural industrialisation
of central Italy which represent alternatives to the
concentrated large scale industry of the big concerns
are closely related to the "alternative technologies"
desired by ecologists. There is a common element of
dissatisfaction and criticism of existing institutions
which unites the environmentalists and those who are
concerned with unemployment.
It appears that thinking about stagnation is not a closed
chapter of the history of doctrines but is actually
very much in a state of flux.
