about these sametime to contribute sketches of a similar character. We alternated 
in the pursuits — "one down, another come on — . I had begun to be a little 
more ambitions, and determined vpon trying my hand with a serial story. I pro- 
duced my "Layrock of Langleyside ’; which was the means of considerably increa- 
sing the circulation. Waugh was aslced te follow, but was extremely doubtful on his 
success in that line. But the must make the attempt The effort residted in the pro- 
duction of ”Besom Ben”, which attained a popularity that has never becn surpassed.
